Special Feature - Brian Maloney:
Brian Maloney was born in King's Cove, Newfoundland (1923) and moved to St. John's to continue his education at St. Bon's and Memorial Colleges. He worked in the banking and insurance fields before taking a position in Imperial's Employee Relations Department in 1951. He was transferred to Halifax when the Newfoundland and Maritimes Divisions were combined into the Atlantic Region. Brian succeeded Len MacDonald as Human Resources Manager in 1965.
Although he never moved outside the human resources function Brian looks at his 34 years as being anything but dull. He particularly enjoyed his visits to the field units. In his time there were 17 salaried distribution plants - 3 in Nova Scotia, 3 in New Brunswick, 1 in Prince Edward Island and 10 in Newfoundland.
There was a directive from Toronto to "get in the field and make your self available to employees." Brian had no problem following this order. Many annuitants will remember Plant Superintendents such as Neil Campbell, Haley Flett, Jack Breneol, Corwin Staples and others who always extended a warm welcome to visitors from Region office.
Like other positions his employee relations job had its challenges. An important one was the need to be sensitive to the family reaction in regards to employee relocations. This was always a very emotional time. Brian was involved in two reorganizations which necessitated transfers of significant numbers, including the Newfoundland move mentioned above and the move of the accounting function from Halifax to Don Mills. Brian likes to feel that in most cases the moves turned out to be satisfactory.
Brian enjoys his semi-weekly visits to Ashburn Golf and Country Club with his golfing buddy Don O'Driscoll. He prides himself on still being able to walk the eighteen holes but offers no comment on his other accomplishments on the golf course.
Brian and his wife Betty celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in October 2008. Their family consists of two daughters, three sons, their five spouses, seven granddaughters, five grandsons, and a two-month old great grandson.
